Dave Atwater is more than just a pillar of the waterfront, he's one of the driving forces behind both of the Whatcom Working Waterfront's educational programs. For 3 years, he's shown up as an instructor time and again, always ready to lend his expertise and time whenever he's needed, no questions asked.
Teaching a workshop well, is hard enough on its own. But becoming a genuine inspiration and role model to the next generation takes something more, and that's exactly where Dave shines. Through his work in our programs and in his everyday life, he has left a lasting impression on countless students, showing them not just the skills of the trade, but the kind of work ethic and character it takes to succeed in the maritime industry. His drive is relentless, his dedication unwavering, and his impact on this community immeasurable.
Last spring, we celebrated a major milestone: the first graduating class of apprentices from the Northwest Maritime Apprenticeship Program. It was a moment years in the making, and Dave gave the room the honor of speaking about the true importance of work, not just as a means to an end, but as a craft worth taking pride in.
As part of his speech, he shared a quote that has stuck with everyone who heard it: “Those who work their hands are laborers. Those who work with their hands and their head are craftsman. But those who works with their hands, their head, and their heart are artists."
It's a fitting reflection of Dave himself, someone who doesn't just teach, but inspires, and who is a big part of why the educational programs he supports thrive the way they do.
A simple thank you doesn't quite cover it. Dave Atwater is an irreplaceable instructor, a dependable source of support, and a true representation of the best the waterfront has to offer.
