Darcey has long been a part of the maritime world. Born into the helm of a commercial fishing family, Darcey spent her youth navigating the deck of a Southeast Alaska long-lining vessel. In the 1990s she helped the family build and launch a 70-foot gaff-rigged schooner which became the base of Sail Mycia, a charter company providing trips and sail training in Southeast Alaska and the Puget Sound for which Darcey was the captain.
After graduating high school in Port Townsend, Washington, Darcey went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Journalism. She used her degree to pursue work in scientific publishing and freelance writing. Ultimately returning to the sea and earning her 100-ton masters license. Henceforth Darcey became known as Cpt. DAMP and was employed on passenger ferries, yachts, and long-boats, ultimately completing her last charter with a baby strapped to her chest. Additionally, her resume includes work as an environmental instructor and yoga teacher.
Today she brings her breadth of experience to the Buoyant Beginnings Pre-apprenticeship as Program Coordinator through the Whatcom Working Waterfront Foundation. In this role, Darcey connects young adults to the maritime sector through employment readiness, workshop experience, tours, and job shadowing. Connecting potential workforce participants with local maritime industries.
Darcey currently enjoys her recreational boating and sports fishing era with her kids. She can often be found over a wave or under a tree, and preferably within sight of the coast.
